Therapy in Weddington for Children, Adolescents, and Adults

Personal Growth

General Approach to therapy

I believe that a strong client-therapist relationship is important to successful therapy. I try to meet people  where they are at and use a blend of strategies including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), social skills approaches, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and  behavioral techniques . I work with children, adolescents, and adults.

Information about Treatment

Treatment Concerns

I treat a variety of concerns including::

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Executive Functioning
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Depression
  • Life Changes & Adjustments
  • Parenting

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder & Executive Functioning

People with ADHD have difficulty staying focused and screening out distractions. In addition, they often have trouble with executive functioning skills. This is a set of skills that includes task initiation, time management, organizational/planning skills, and self-monitoring. I enjoy helping people learn about executive functioning and develop strategies to stay organized, plan ahead, and keep track of important things.

Autism Spectrum Disorders

People with Autism Spectrum Disorders have difficulty with social communication skills. They also exhibit unusual interests, sensory sensitivities, and difficulty adjusting to changes in routine. I use a variety of options to help people build social skills and consider how other people are feeling and what other people are interested in.

Anxiety & Depression

I treat generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, depression and other problems in this area. Anxiety and depression are often rooted in negative thinking and negative self-talk. I use strategies from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

Parenting

Even under the best of circumstances, parenting is challenging. I enjoy helping parents understand their children better (e.g., learning more about Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, or anxiety), build relationships with their children, balance work and family time, and discuss challenges such as discipline, technology usage/screen time, and social/cultural influences on our families.

Life Transitions

Each new phase of life brings us new challenges and this can be difficult. This can include: starting high school, going to college, beginning a new job, making new friends, moving to a new place, or adjusting to family and relationship changes. Talking with a therapist can help us work through these changes and adjust.

Therapeutic Styles

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (or CBT) focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. How we think impacts how we feel and and the way they act. I have different ways of adapting CBT for children, adolescents, and adults.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is described as a verb: "Act." Amongst other things, Act focuses on what works in a given context or a given moment with the goal of moving towards our values and what is really important to us. It has so much more to offeras well.

Coping Skills

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Coping Skills

I often work to help people develop a set of coping skills to manage anxiety, depression, or anger. This can include deep breathing and positive thinking.

Executive Functioning Skills

I enjoy working with parents on strategies to help decrease hyperactive, impulsive, and disruptive behaviors. I like helping families develop reward systems to reinforce positive behaviors.

In-Person vs teletherapy

In-person Therapy

In-person Therapy

In-person Therapy

I offer in-person sessions in Weddington, just south of Charlotte.

Some people prefer In-person sessions because it helps form an connection and ensures privacy.

Teletherapy

In-person Therapy

In-person Therapy

As a PsyPact provider. I can provide teletherapy to  people in 39+ states.

Telehealth offers easy access to care and the convenience of meeting from a location of your choosing. Some people like scheduling a session in the morning before work or during lunch. As long as you have a private location with a strong Wifi signal, teletherapy is a great option.
